Check the manual
Find the viscosity grade and performance standard specified by your vehicle manufacturer.
Oil guide
A straightforward guide to the numbers, standards and checks that help protect your engine.
Viscosity explained
The number before W indicates how the oil flows during colder starts. A lower number generally flows more readily when cold.
The second number describes viscosity at operating temperature. It is not a temperature rating.
Important
A thicker oil is not automatically better. Using the wrong grade can reduce efficiency or protection. Follow the owner's manual.
Four-step check
Find the viscosity grade and performance standard specified by your vehicle manufacturer.
A grade such as 5W-30 and a standard such as API SP describe different requirements. Match both.
Climate, engine age, load and driving pattern matter—but never override the manufacturer’s requirements.
Follow the recommended service interval and replace the oil filter with the correct type.
